  6. this is ridiculous…
why do we have to name 50?!

  7. Like how IMDb has a Top 250, except not for drama movies. I’m aware that IMDb also has a Top 50 for horror and all that, and it’s of almost no use since that list is also biased towards more drama than the actual horror.

I guess what I want is a site with a sophisticated system of organizing their top films (Not drama ones, of course). I’ve read about different kinds of IMDbs. Like for Korean movies, or gay-themed movies….. anyone know about a horror one?

I’ll give BA to anyone who can find me a Top 100 most disturbing movies list, or anything along the lines of what I’ve mentioned previously.

  8. Here’s the most recently updated version of the list from best-horror-movies.com: http://www.best-horror-movies.com/100-top-horror-movies.html

Scroll down for the actual list, but their rating system is very good and it provides several viewpoints. I think it’s a very good list – of course, it’s all personal preference, but if you’re a horror fan there’s bound to be a few of your favourites on there at least.

EDIT: Yeah, well, the poster who just listed them… that’s a pretty typical list you’ll find anyway.

  9. A friend is currently auditioning for LAMDA, Central School, Drama Centre and several others as well as RSAMD, RWCMD.

I’ve read that these schools audition 1,000-2,000 people every year for their undergrad course and take only about 50 people out of that number?

Is it really that hard to get into? I think she’s building her hopes up as she’s totally convinced she’ll get offered a place at one of them this year. She is a good actress, however, and she’s 22 which would possibly make a better impression than an immature 18 year old.

  10. if she is any good she will get in,they look for those with potential.

  13. My parents came to the US when I was around 10, I learned to speak English fluently at the age of 12. Before coming to the deep south my family lived in New York and California, each for 1 year. Life was great, I made straight A’s, learned things fast, and I was able to do great in my classes.

Then my parents moved to the deep south around when I was 12. The county we are currently in has a very bad high school system. Gangs are common, drug dealers roam, and we have shootings in the schools. I managed to get into a decent magnet school for my high school years but due to not learning anything my 2 years of middle school (too much drama, teachers never taught, we were given grades and told to keep quiet about it), I struggled initially in high school. Parents did not know what was going on, we hardly knew anyone, high school did not have a lot of ECs and rarely sent kids to the top universities. Finished high school with a 3.3 GPA, had no idea about college admissions, rarely any help from counselor. Made a 1980 on the SAT without studying, high school only offered 3 AP classes.

I am 18, finished my first year of college with a 2.8 GPA (I ended up at a local university). Wanted to major in biology but strict nazi parents made me major in Biochemistry and we had a fight over it but they were the ones who were paying for my college.

I always dreamed of being at a Duke, UVA, Georgetown, UC Berkeley, UW-Madison, or even a UGA or UT-Austin, maybe an Ivy. Thing is my environment has been so limiting and I have not had so many opportunities that now I feel like it is my time to let go of my dream. Is it time for me to accept the fact that I will be stuck at a local university and most likely not get into a top 50 university for grad school or anything?

  14. The first year of a biology major and a biochemistry major are essentially identical. I’m not sure how your “strict Nazi parents” are responsible for your GPA when those are the same classes you would have taken if you had your own way.

Stop whining. Biology and biochemistry are similar enough that you can do either for graduate studies. You are getting poor grades because you aren’t putting in the effort. Next year, get a tutor, form a study group and go to office hours regularly. To better prepare yourself for graduate school, go do research in a biology lab. If your school doesn’t do research, go to another school during the summers. Take biology electives during your senior year. Get to know your professors so they will write good letters for you. You’ll be better prepared for a biology Master’s/PhD with those extra biology courses, but you’ll still be a biochemistry major like your parents expect.

At the end of the day, you have to make the most of what life gives you. Going to a local university is no excuse for doing poorly in your classes. Be proactive and talk to your advisor about how you can attend a top 50 university. He/she will likely tell you the same thing I have.

  15. Devastation Street: What do you think? Over the Top for me! We all know that Tragedy happens but this 50th Celebration of our all time favorite Soap could have taken a different path. People watch soaps to escape from their own worries, and for some the show is liken to an extended family. I have mixed feelings about this and wonder how this may affect some people. 1st rate drama YES!
But was it over the top?

  16. Maybe slightly over the top but you need something like that to mark your 50th anniversary. I found it compelling, it was so exiting and quite scare, especially when Simon was trapped in the burning building. I really want Peter to survive mainly because of Simon but I also love the character, he’s so nice now he’s left his problems behind. I was so sad when Ashley die, I nearly cried. The fact that everyone was doing there bit to try and save the victims of the tram crash and explosion was brilliant, there was so much community spirit and it brought out the best in some of the characters (Jason, Ciaran and even Nick). The only part I didn’t like is the fact that John killed Charlotte, John will be found out as people always do on soaps and that will ruin things for poor Fiz and I even feel sorry for John. He’s not a bad person, he just gets himself into terrible situations because he has no common sense.

  18. I think you have everybody’s 2nd (or 3rd or 4th) best album ahead of what I think is their best album.

  19. Movies that 50 years from now people will look back on fondly.

    My picks:

    300 (action)
    40-Year Old Virgin (comedy)
    The Matrix (sci-fi)
Pulp Fiction (cult fav, some would argue Boondock Saints)
    The Notebook (romance/drama)

  20. Forrest Gump
    Raising Arizona
    Shawshank Redemption
    Saving Private Ryan
    Hunt for Red October
    Big Fat Greek Wedding
    E.T.

    Well, I’m over the limit….
